How to slice bread for paninis?

I recieved a panini maker as a gift and I can't figure out what kind of bread to use or how to slice it that way. It was too soft it just fell apart. Any suggestions??

  1. Use italian bread.
  2. Like she said, Italian bread sliced 1 inch (or about 25mm) thick.
  3. FOCACCIA OR CIABATTA
  4. Italian or French breads are used in Panini or Smashed Sandwiches.
  5. I use sourdough and slice it about 3/4" thick, on the diagonal. That's for hearty sandwiches like deli chicken, provolone and pesto. But my panini grill works just fine with sliced white bread to make grilled cheeses. The secret is not to touch the sandwiches. Let them sear before you turn or flip.
  6. Some sort of italian bread - ciabatta or focaccia bread are good! Some sort of herby bread. If you use 'normal' bread, slice it thickly and make sure you put a bit of butter on the sides touching thee panini maker... it toasts the bread much better, and it has a better taste (plus it's easier to get off after it's been toasted!)
